Frequently asked questions
About the NCA exams, and about studying with Master NCA.
About the NCA exams
What are the NCA exams?
The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams are standardised legal exams for internationally trained lawyers and graduates of non-Canadian law schools who want to practise law in Canada. The NCA assesses your legal education and decides what you need to do to meet Canadian standards.
Who needs to take the NCA exams?
Internationally trained lawyers who want to practise in Canada, graduates of foreign law schools (including common law graduates from outside Canada), and Canadians who studied law abroad and want to practise in Canada.
Which subjects do most candidates take?
Most candidates must complete five core exams: Foundations of Canadian Law, Canadian Constitutional Law, Canadian Administrative Law, Canadian Criminal Law and Canadian Professional Responsibility. Your NCA assessment report may also assign other subjects, such as Commercial Law, Business Organizations, Remedies, Torts, Civil Procedure, Family Law, Evidence, Contracts or Property.
What is the exam format?
NCA exams are three-hour, open-book exams written online. They are graded pass or fail, and a pass typically requires 50% or higher.
What is the LRW requirement?
Legal Research and Writing (LRW) is an additional requirement that some candidates must complete before they receive their Certificate of Qualification. It assesses your ability to research, analyse legal issues and write in a professional legal format.
What happens after I pass?
Once you meet all NCA requirements, you receive a Certificate of Qualification. You then apply to a provincial or territorial law society and complete its bar admission requirements, such as articling (or an alternative such as Ontario’s Law Practice Program) and the bar exams.
